Laying down too many hexes

So far the game has to a large extent been about drawing and placing individual terrain tiles. It has however been pointed out that making ~60 hexes stay in place while playing is going to be difficult once my game transitions from being exclusively digital to something more tactile and analogue. Like imagine nudging one hex and then displacing a significant part of the board from some sort of ripple effect. I get frustrated just imagining it. My hope was that a nice frame, like the one in Catan, would mitigate this problem enough that it wouldn’t be a bother. Sadly, this has been debunked by several other designers as the number of hexes is simply too great.

So, that means I need another solution for the tiles all-together. Luckily, I recently got a great suggestion: why not place down several tiles at once? Not only will keeping 3+ hexes together make them stay in place better – it will also provide some interesting potential mechanics and thereby choice for the players. Up until now players have just drawn one tile and then placed it down in the spot where they moved their piece – with this new setup the players could potentially get a choice in which of the 3+ tiles that their piece enters. It can also provide opportunities to gain tactical advantages if you set up the hexes to hinder the movement of your opponents.

I’m going to start out with a sort of flower-shape to the tiles consisting of 7 individual hexes. Here are some pics of what it will look like:

I’m thinking I will let players draw one tile when exploring and every tile will contain two sides with different flower-setups. Hopefully this provides some interesting choices for the players. Now I only need to test it in the wind tunnel a.k.a. Tabletop simulator.
